Kite Flying is a popular pastime in Afghanistan. From 1996 to 2001 the Taliban
took over power in Afghanistan. Simple joys like flying kites were banned.
Although it is now forbidden, women and girls were never allowed to join the fun
of kite flying in the first place. So when the Taliban were driven out of power
and boys and men could fly kites again, women could still only dream of joining.
Kites symbolize freedom, but also the oppression of women in Afghanistan.
